Battery system

A battery system is an arrangement of batteries and associated components that work together to store and release electrical energy when needed. It is used in a variety of applications, from small portable devices to large industrial and grid-connected energy storage systems.

 

Components of a battery system

  • Battery cells: These are the actual energy storage devices that convert chemical energy into electrical energy. They are combined into battery modules.
  • Battery management system (BMS): A BMS monitors the condition of the batteries, including state of charge, temperature, voltage and current. It ensures that the batteries are operated safely and efficiently, protects against overcharging, deep discharging and overheating and balances the cells to guarantee consistent usage.
  • Charger: A charger is required to recharge the batteries. It controls the charging process and ensures that the batteries are not damaged.
  • Inverter (optional): In systems that require alternating current (AC), an inverter converts the direct current (DC) supplied by the batteries into alternating current.
  • Housing and safety systems: The housing protects the batteries and electronics from external influences. Safety systems such as pressure relief valves, fuses and thermal monitoring are also important components.

 

Applications of battery systems

  • Electric vehicles: In electric cars, battery systems store energy that drives the electric motor.
  • Grid-connected energy storage: In combination with renewable energy sources such as solar or wind power plants, these systems store surplus energy that can be used later.
  • Emergency power supply: In hospitals, data centers and other critical infrastructure, battery systems provide an uninterrupted power supply in the event of a grid failure.
  • Portable devices: Laptops, smartphones and other electronic devices use small battery systems to supply energy.

A battery system is therefore a crucial component in many modern technologies that require a reliable and efficient energy supply.
